The Force Awakened….

The-Force-Awakens-PosterWell friends, I finally watched The Force Awakens (TFA) January 3rd.  In a nutshell it was good.  It wasn’t anything like I expected and none of my theories were correct but alas, I expected that.

Unfortunately, much like The Phantom Menace, I left the theatre with more questions than answers, as did many fans. There were a lot of gaps and there were a lot of things that just didn’t really seem to fit.

Was it better the The Empire Strikes Back? In my opinion, no, although it came close.  It certainly was entertaining enough to help me forget about the prequels! I did like JJ Abrams style and thank god he backed off on all the “lens flare” effects…in the Star Trek movies that he helmed, that effect drove me nuts!

To add to my thoughts on TFA, I was disappointed with a few things. (Spoliers) I didn’t like the fact that Luke shows up at the very end of the movie.  I didn’t like the fact that we didn’t get to see much of R2 and 3PO.  The villain was a whiny baby IMHO.  Captain Phasma seemed to be more of an extra than anything else.  Who the fuck is Snoke?  Han gets wasted in a very shitty way and the response from his lifelong friend Chewbacca is laughable and poorly handled by writers JJ Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan.

And finally, I totally agree with George Lucas.  This was a retro film. Although it pays homage to Star Wars of old, it seemed a bit recycled: Another desert planet, another ice planet, another rebellion, another Death Star type weapon. another scenario where everyone is looking for a small droid, another young person dreaming of a different life then being thrust into a whole new world, another villain robed all in black wearing a mask and sporting a red lightsaber, another cantina scene full of assorted aliens, another large “projected” version of the “leader” of the bad dudes, the list goes on.

Don’t get me wrong.  I thoroughly enjoyed this film because I am old school Original Trilogy so it brought back a lot of fond memories. Having said this I hope, like The Empire Strikes Back, the second installment is much better…Goodbye, General Solo…you will be missed.

Vader is here, now…

prowseIt has been confirmed that the latest Star Wars spin off film will center around Han Solo.  It was announce a week or so ago.  Apparently although not a major role, our favorite Sith Lord, Darth Vader will be making an appearance.

They can certainly pull off the voice of Vader because James Earl Jones is still doing Vader voiceover’s (Star Wars Rebels animated series).  The question is, who will play the character?  Who dons the helmet one more time?

Mr. David Prowse, if you are listening, here’s your chance.  You got shut out of reprising your role as Vader in Revenge of the Sith, because appatently George didn’t want you.  Now that George (Lucas) has sold Lucasfilm to Disney, it’s Disney’s call as to who wears the black armour.

I think Dave deserves a shot at it because then, as Vader would say, “The circle is now complete”…all the other principal actors reprised their original roles in Star Wars Episode VII…it’s time to give Vader back to the man who brought him to life.

Delusions of Grandeur? Maybe not….

jj-abrams-star-warsI read an article a few months ago about an interview with Anthony Daniels (C-3P0).  In it he stated that he believes that “Episode VII – The Force Awakens will be better than The Empire Strikes Back”.  For Star Wars fans, that’s a big statement.

Coming from the man that has been the physical and vocal (cartoons, video games etc.) character of C-3P0 for almost 40 years, I first though this was a jaded perspective.  I thought of course he would say something like that because Star Wars has been his primary source of income for 4 decades.Perhaps I was too critical of his comments because I thought he was just trying to pump up the new film.

After recently watching JJ Abrams second movie in the other space franchise…ok I’ll say it, Star Trek…I must admit that he really knows what he is doing.  I though the second film was way better than the first and it was very entertaining.  I kept thinking to myself if he and the writer from The Empire Strikes Back, Mr. Lawrence Kasdan, wrote a great script for Episode VII then it is a certainty that it will be very well directed.

Maybe Threepio is right.  Could The Force Awakens be better or equal to The Empire Strikes Back?  As a fan, I sure hope so…I’ll just have to wait another 299 days to find out!

If Episode VII sucks…it’s not my fault.

glIn a recent interview Star Wars creator George Lucas was quoted as saying that if the new Star Wars movie sucks that he won’t be responsible.  Apparently none of the writing credits will go to Lucas this time.  Even though he had written a draft for Episode VII a few years earlier (and subsequently sold it along with his company to Disney), it was not used for Episode VII.

So I guess it’s really official…other than acting as a creative consultant, Lucas has absolutely no input in what happens to his epic space saga.  Sadly this is what happens when you sell everything! Mind you, he got married a few years ago so it’s probably no coincidence that he’s living the good life with his younger wife, Melody Hobson and his newly born daughter (2013).

In a way it’s probably a good thing for Mr. Lucas.  Just think, he has either written and/or directed every Star Wars film (and rightly so) until now so it may be a nice treat for him.  Why?  Because when he sees Episode VII in the theatre (likely his own) he will, for the first time, be seeing a Star Wars film that he did not create or have any input in.  He finally gets to “watch” !

I can’t wait until “The Force Awakens”…

It’s official…Star Wars Episode VII has a title: “The Force Awakens“.  It sounds cool.  Certainly better than “Attack of the Clones” and ultimately a better film, or so we hope.  A lot of it has been surprisingly kept secret with of course the odd picture surfacing here and there. One of my favorites is what I like to call the “SpaceHog”.spacehogApparently it’s a full sized creature that takes several men to operate it, much like Jabba the Hut was in Return of the Jedi.  Apparently JJ Abrams wanted to use a great deal of physical effects like in days of old rather than relying too heavily on blue/green screen computer animation. I for one hope that a return to old school visual effects will make the film one of the best in the series.  After all the fan favorite, The Empire Strikes Back was directed by someone (Irvin Kershner) other than George  Lucas so there is still hope that this film will be like Star Wars of old.  I can’t wait until The Force Awakens!

Expanded Universe may yet be of some use to us….

Rumours have it that Adam Driver will play the role of Jacen Solo (or whatever name they give him), Han and Leia’s son.  Daisy Ridley is supposedly playing the role of their daughter Jaina (again whatever name they choose with Solo tacked on at the end).

Jaina_vs_CaedusApparently they are going to take some of the plot lines from the Expanded Universe novels in where Driver’s character plays a Jedi who is turned to the darkside and it’s Ridley’s character that tries to bring him back to the “good” side. The storyline makes a lot of sense and definitely would bring back some of the old conflicts that were present in previous films…Good versus evil…Dark versus light…Sith Versus Jedi. The intriguing part is that it happens to the offspring of Han & Leia and makes it that much more interesting.  It’s also a good way to ensure that, at the very least, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher are potentially written off in Episode VII…in the novels, Jacen Solo becomes Darth Caedus and tries to snuff out his parents, deeming them New Republic terrorists.

I would venture to guess that Max von Sydow’s character will play the villain that tempts Driver’s character into becoming a Sith.

On the surface, Adam Driver does look a little bit like a cross between Harrison ford and Carrie Fisher. If this is the plot line that they are taking, which, based on the casting looks to fit, then it should be an interesting story.

Another plot line is that because this Jacen Solo becomes powerful, he pits his power of the Force against what will most assuredly be MASTER Jedi Luke Skywalker.  The master being that after 30 years, Luke has become the same or more powerful than Yoda was. This could also be the way the write Mark Hamill out of Episode VII. Luke would potentially fail to beat Darth Caedus….

I speak to the fact that having Harrison ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill be cast for episodes VIII and IX doesn’t make a lot of sense considering Disney has already stated the new films will focus on the children (of the main characters). So, this plot line seems the most feasible
